ESP, Automation and Deliverability Terms. Role-targeted keyword map with ATS-safe placement strategies.
Email marketing manager resumes are screened on the platform you send from, the automation you built and whether you can protect deliverability, so name the ESP, list the flows by trigger, and show your authentication and reputation work.

Analyze Role KeywordsEmail hiring is unusually platform driven because build work does not transfer cleanly. Klaviyo, Braze, Iterable, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Adobe Campaign, Marketo, HubSpot, Customer.io, Mailchimp and Dotdigital each have their own segmentation model, template system and automation canvas, and a manager fluent in one still needs weeks in another. Name the ones you have worked in and be specific about the modules, whether that was a journey canvas, an email studio, a campaign against flow distinction, or the templating and scripting language you wrote in. If you administered the account rather than only used it, say so, because user management, sending domain configuration and integration setup are separate competencies.
Give the operating scale alongside the platform. Subscriber count, weekly or monthly send volume, the number of live automations, the markets and languages you sent into, and whether transactional mail sat in the same platform or a separate service. Migration experience deserves its own line if you have it, because it is one of the most frequently hired-for projects in the discipline and it is genuinely hard: template rebuilds, data model mapping, consent and suppression list transfer, address and domain warming, automation parity testing and a cutover plan with a rollback option. A candidate who has completed a migration end to end is evaluated differently from one who has not.
Inbox placement quietly determines everything else in the programme, and its vocabulary is precise enough to function as a competence test. Sender Policy Framework, DomainKeys Identified Mail and Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting and Conformance should appear both spelled out and as SPF, DKIM and DMARC, along with your policy position and whether you moved the domain from monitoring to quarantine or rejection. Add subdomain strategy for marketing against transactional mail, dedicated against shared sending addresses, warming schedules, and brand indicators for message identification where you implemented it. These terms separate a campaign builder from someone who can be trusted with a sending reputation.
Then describe the monitoring and hygiene practice. Postmaster and sender reputation dashboards from the major mailbox providers, seed list and inbox placement testing, complaint rate thresholds, bounce classification with automated suppression, spam trap exposure, and a documented sunset policy that stops mailing people who have not engaged within a defined window. The bulk sender requirements introduced by the largest consumer mailbox providers made authenticated sending, a one-click list unsubscribe header and a low complaint rate effectively mandatory, so if you led that compliance work, say when and what you changed. Recovering placement after a reputation incident is a stronger story still, so include the diagnosis and the remediation sequence.
The clearest signal of an automation-capable manager is a named list of flows with their triggers. On the consumer side that means welcome and onboarding series, browse and cart abandonment with their respective trigger conditions, post-purchase and review requests, replenishment timed to product cycle, cross-sell driven by category affinity, win-back, and re-engagement leading into sunset. On the business side it means nurture tracks by persona or stage, trial onboarding and activation sequences, adoption prompts driven by in-product events, renewal and expansion sequences, and reactivation of closed-lost pipeline. The specifics tell a reviewer what your data environment looked like as much as what you built.
Describe the logic rather than the existence of each flow. Entry and exit criteria, branching on behaviour or profile attributes, wait steps and the reasoning behind their length, frequency capping and suppression rules that prevent a subscriber receiving a promotion and a service message in the same hour, holdout groups that let you measure a flow's actual contribution, and the priority order when someone qualifies for several journeys at once. If you personalised beyond a first name token, say how, whether through dynamic content blocks, recommendation feeds, catalogue data, predictive attributes or locale-aware content. Suppression and frequency management are the topics senior interviewers use to test whether you have run a real programme.
Since mailbox providers began pre-fetching images and masking engagement for privacy, open rate has become an unreliable headline, and continuing to lead with it dates a resume immediately. Use click-through and click-to-open with the caveat understood, then move to the measures that survive: conversion rate, revenue per recipient or per email sent, the split between automated flow revenue and broadcast revenue, list growth net of churn, unsubscribe and complaint rates, and incremental revenue measured against a holdout. State how email revenue was attributed, because a strict last-click model and a multi-day post-click and post-view window produce very different numbers from exactly the same programme.
Craft still counts. Say whether you built templates yourself, in hand-written responsive markup, a compiling framework or a drag-and-drop builder, and mention dark mode rendering, accessibility practices such as semantic structure and meaningful alternative text, plain text alternatives, and rendering tests across major clients. Describe the testing programme with its statistical discipline: what you tested beyond subject lines, how you sized samples, how long you waited before calling a result, and which findings actually changed the programme. Subject line tests on small lists rarely reach significance, and a candidate who acknowledges that demonstrates more judgment than one claiming an unbroken run of winning tests.
| Signal | Why It Matters | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Managed email marketing campaigns appears with no sending platform named. | Build skill is platform specific, and a team hiring for an existing estate treats generic email experience as a ramp-up risk. | Name each platform, the modules you used inside it, and whether you built, migrated or administered the account. |
| Open rate is used as the headline performance metric. | Mailbox privacy features inflate opens for a large share of recipients, so leading with open rate reads as out of date to any senior reviewer. | Lead with click-through and conversion metrics, revenue per recipient, and the split between flow and campaign revenue. |
| No deliverability language appears anywhere in the resume. | Many senior email roles exist partly because inbox placement is at risk, and authentication and reputation skills are comparatively scarce. | Add the authentication records you implemented, the reputation tooling you monitored, and the sunset policy you enforced. |

Follow this guided reading path to build topic depth and improve your ATS outcomes faster.
Treat open rate as a directional deliverability signal rather than a performance metric, and be explicit that you know the difference. Lead with click-through rate on delivered mail, conversion rate, revenue per recipient or per email sent, and the proportion of programme revenue coming from automated flows against broadcasts. Where you have it, incremental revenue against a holdout group is the strongest number available because it survives attribution disputes. If a target employer still reports on opens, you can include the figure while noting the measurement caveat, which usually reads as expertise rather than as an excuse.
You do not need to hand-code every template, but you do need to be able to diagnose a broken one. Postings vary: agency and ecommerce roles often expect working knowledge of table-based responsive email markup or a framework that compiles to it, while enterprise roles may have a design system and a developer to maintain it. Say honestly which side you sit on, and describe what you can do, whether that is editing modular templates, working in a drag-and-drop builder, handling dark mode and client rendering issues, or writing personalisation and scripting logic in the platform's own templating language.
