Partnerships and Growth Terms. Role-targeted keyword map with ATS-safe placement strategies.
Business development manager means three different jobs depending on the employer, so decide whether you are targeting new-logo selling, partnerships and channel, or bid and capture work, then build the resume around that lane's metrics and mirror the exact title language used in the postings you want.

Analyze Role KeywordsBusiness development manager is one of the least standardized titles in hiring, and that ambiguity costs candidates interviews. In much of the UK, Australia, India, and across agencies, staffing, professional services, and industrial sales, it means a quota-carrying seller chasing new logos. In North American software companies, the same title usually points to partnerships, alliances, or channel work, and sometimes to corporate development and deal structuring. In government contracting, construction, engineering, and consulting, it often means capture and proposal leadership, where growth arrives through competitive bids rather than individual selling. The three lanes share almost no metrics.
Because one resume cannot lead with three different metric sets, choose a lane per version. Read five postings you would genuinely take, note which vocabulary dominates, and rebuild the summary and first role to match. The other experience does not disappear, it moves down and gets compressed into range rather than headline. Industry matters here too, since business development is one of the most sector-bound functions there is: selling clinical services to health systems, capital equipment to manufacturers, and software to technology buyers involve different cycles, buyer committees, and credibility signals, and hiring managers screen for sector familiarity early.
If your business development role was quota carrying, write it like a closing seller's resume. Lead with the quota, its period, and your attainment, then add consistency across quarters or years and ranking against a stated team size when it is genuinely strong. Fill in the shape of the deals: average contract value or total contract value, sales cycle length, number of new logos won, the mix of new business versus expansion, and how much of your pipeline you self-sourced rather than received. Self-sourced percentage is a particularly strong signal in this lane, because it separates hunters from sellers who depend on inbound demand.
Then show the mechanics buyers of this skill care about. Multi-threading into procurement, legal, finance, and technical evaluators, running structured discovery, building business cases, handling competitive displacement, and navigating formal purchasing processes are all worth naming. If you sold into a formal buying process involving tenders or panel arrangements, say so, since that is a different competency from transactional selling. Name your qualification methodology, your customer relationship management system, and your prospecting and data tools by product, and add any formal sales training you completed, since postings frequently name specific methodologies and search for them directly.
Partnership and channel roles are measured indirectly, and using the wrong measurement language is the fastest way to look like a seller applying to the wrong job. The core numbers are partner-sourced pipeline and revenue, where the partner originated the opportunity, and partner-influenced pipeline, where the partner materially helped a deal you already had. Add the health metrics around them: number of partners actively transacting rather than merely signed, time from signature to first registered deal, deal registration volume, and the share of total company revenue flowing through the ecosystem. Those figures answer the question every partnership leader asks, which is whether your agreements produced anything.
Name the partner types and the motions, because they are not interchangeable. Resellers and value-added resellers, distributors, managed service providers, systems integrators and consultancies, independent software vendors and technology partners, referral partners, and cloud marketplace listings all involve different economics and different enablement work. The operating vocabulary includes joint business planning, co-selling and co-marketing, market development funds, partner tiering and program design, certification and enablement paths, deal registration rules, margin and rebate structures, and quarterly business reviews. Partner relationship management platforms and ecosystem mapping tools are searched by name, so list the ones you used alongside the customer relationship management system they connected to.
In construction, engineering, defense, healthcare services, education, and consulting, growth runs through formal procurement, and business development means capture management. This lane has its own process vocabulary that reviewers expect to see: opportunity identification and pipeline qualification well before a tender is published, bid or no-bid decision gating, capture planning and competitor assessment, win theme and value proposition development, pricing strategy, proposal writing and review cycles, and post-submission clarification and negotiation. Formal capture methodologies and structured colour review processes are named directly in many postings and should be named in your resume if you have worked to them.
The metrics are equally distinct. Report bids submitted, bids won, win rate expressed both by count and by value, total contract value secured, and average pursuit size. Add framework and panel positions won, since qualifying onto a purchasing framework can be worth more than any single contract. Public sector work has additional searchable specifics, including registration and procurement portals, indefinite delivery contract vehicles, teaming agreements and prime or subcontractor positioning, past performance records, and small business or social value requirements. Naming those precisely tells a reviewer you have operated inside real procurement rules rather than only in commercial sales.
| Signal | Why It Matters | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The summary claims to drive growth through strategic partnerships and new business. | That sentence covers three different jobs at once, so it matches the search intent of none of them precisely. | Pick one lane for this version of the resume and state the segment, motion, and headline number in the first sentence. |
| Partnership achievements described only as relationships built or agreements signed. | Signed agreements that never produce pipeline are the known failure pattern in partnerships, and leaders screen specifically against it. | Report partner-sourced and partner-influenced pipeline and revenue, plus how many partners were actually transacting. |
| Proposal experience listed with no win rate or contract value. | Bid-led business development is judged on capture success, and volume of submissions without outcomes suggests a coordinator role rather than an owner. | Give bids submitted, wins, win rate by value and by count, and the total contract value secured. |

Follow this guided reading path to build topic depth and improve your ATS outcomes faster.
Mirror the language of the roles you want, and use your real title accurately. If you carried a quota for new logos and are applying to software companies that call that job an account executive, keep your official title but describe the work in account executive terms so both searches reach you. If you are applying in markets or industries where business development manager is the standard label for the same work, the title itself is already the keyword and no translation is needed.
Show the parts of partnerships you have already done rather than positioning the move as a fresh start. Co-selling alongside an implementation or technology partner, sourcing deals through referrals, running joint account planning, or supporting a reseller all count and should be quantified. Then add the vocabulary of the function, including deal registration, joint business planning, enablement, and sourced versus influenced attribution, because partnership leaders screen for whether you understand that indirect revenue is measured differently from direct.
